これもいいです。

　父親を船の事故で亡くし、父の知り合いを訪ねた主人公サリー。彼女が何気なく口にした質問を聞いた瞬間、彼はは突然恐怖の表情を浮かべ、倒れて死んでしまう。

　こんな衝撃的なシーンから物語はスタートする。フィリッププルマンは話の展開が非常にうまい。読んでいてどんどん引き込まれる。

　3部作シリーズの1作目としてではなく、1つの物語としても十分に面白い。私はライラのシリーズの方が好みだが、これはこれで読む価値のある本だと思う。
　
　それにしても、この作者、強い女主人公書くの上手だなあ（笑）。

原書に挑戦しようかなと思っている方へ

黄金の羅針盤で有名なプルマンの別の三部作の一作目です。
１　The ruby in the smoke
２ The shadow in the north
３ The tiger in the well　　と、続きます。
主人公はサリー　ロックハートという女性。第一作では彼女はまだ１０代。

早くに母親を無くし父親に育てられた彼女はビクトリア時代の女性の常識的な教育は受けませんでしたが、父親から自立の精神とそのための技術を受け継ぎます。第一作では、彼女は愛する父親の死の謎に挑みます。
三作を通じての登場人物、ちょっとネタばれしますがラスボスもすでに一作目で登場しますから人物関係は押さえて読んでください。

英語はハリーポッターと同じくらいだと思います。ただし、舞台がビクトリア朝の頃なのでその時代ならではの風物を表す単語が難しかったです。ほとんどを読み飛ばしてしまいました。

女性の権利が認められていない時代にひとり奮闘するサリーの姿はそのまま現代の女性のがんばる姿です。必ず仕事も家族も友人も暖かい家も全部手に入れられると信じて３冊読み通してください。きっと元気になります。
星ひとつマイナスは第三作を星５つにすると、１作、２作は４つかな？ということでおもしろくないというポイントではありません。

The opening of new series

For the readers of Dark Material Trilogy, it is fair to state that this is not a fantasy novel. I began to read this book expecting another fantasy world. Am I disappointed? No way! The new heroine Sally is attractive enough. And surrounded by a number of elements like the legendary ruby, opium, stereographs, pirates, and enigmatic letters, we can enjoy the atmosphere of Victorian London. This book has enough power to lure readers to the second volume of the series.

表紙はなんなのかな？（読めば分かる）

240pと短くていいです。ライラの冒険シリーズよりも英語も易しく、１巻１巻で話が完結するのもＰＢ初心者には嬉しい。ライラの冒険は面白いけど、１巻では終わらない（面白いから、結局３巻読むことになったのでいいんですが。）あと、ライラは少し怖すぎたけどこれはそうでもない。

内容は、Sallyは言うに及ばず、少女Adelaideや悪役も魅力的でひき込まれます。

I Learned About England and the Opium Trade

A terrific fast-paced mystery whose audience should not be limited to teenagers. Pullman grabs your attention on the first page with "Her name was Sally lockhart; and within fifteen minutes, she was going to kill a man," but not in the way one expects, especially in this day and age. Ensnared, I started reading at teatime and finished before dinner at six. The backdrop of Victorian London and colorful characters call to mind the penny dreadful, but is far richer and meticulously crafted. And I learned something new about England and the Opium trade. I am a fan of Christie and Ngaio Marsh and this is definitely rates up there with those genteel mysteries. Not quite up to Sayers for humour, but this is only my first Pullman. On to the next!
