この本の良いところは、人々に科学の面白さを上手に教えることができる著者ならではの、なるべく正確に、しかも面白く、という能力と努力がよく現れているところにあるのでしょう。また、宗教について、おおよそ抽象的、たまにロマンティック、またはとくになにも考えをもたない人（たぶん多くの日本人）にとっては、この宗教批判の本が、逆説的に宗教理解に役立つのではないかと思います。
進化論が専門である著者リチャード ドーキンスは、ながらく欧米で無神論(atheism)を擁護する立場をとって旺盛な講演活動をしています。それは、科学を啓蒙する立場である彼にとっては必然だったのかも知れません。近年では他の代表的宗教批判者3人とグループをつくり、彼らの活動はここ2，3年とくに宗教が影響を及ぼしているアメリカで、反響を呼んでいます。ドーキンスのウェブサイトを見る限り、どちらかというとグループとそれに追随する人々は、イスラム批判に傾く傾向があるようです。ドーキンス自身はこの本でキリスト教もユダヤ教もイスラム教も満遍なく批判していますが。文化批評家のスラヴォイ ジジェクは、本人もatheistであると自分で言っていますが、政治的に右派に利用されやすいドーキンスのグループの活動には批判的な立場をとっています。
もし、あなたが、アメリカを旅行中に、あなたの宗教がなんであるかを聞かれたら、なんと答えますか？もし、あなたが、とくになにも信仰していなければ？
atheistと答えてはいけない、とアドバイスされた人はいませんか？懐疑（skeptic)、あるいは不可知（agnostic)、または「神様はいると思うが特定の宗教は信じていない」と答える人は？「文化的には仏教と儒教の影響を受けているがわからない」と答える人は？
この本のレビューを見ると、「日本は無神論の国で良かった」というようなものが散見されますが、それは本当はドーキンスが言うような無神論ではないと思います。うがった見方をすれば、「誰も信じていないから信じない」という一種の錯覚（delusion)だと思います。認知科学者のスティーブン ピンカーは日本人の宗教のようなものとして、conformism（権威主義）という言葉を与えています。
この本に影響されたからではありませんが、私自身は、atheistである、と答えています。「ある程度西洋の思想のことも理解した上で、そう答えることにしている。立場がはっきりしたほうが、あなたとも話がしやすいから」と補足しています。
ドーキンスがもっぱら批判の対象として挙げるのは、旧約聖書を共有している３つの一神教です。なぜならそれが彼のよく知っている事柄だからです。仏教については、「むしろ道徳の仕組みだろう」と、彼の知る宗教とは異なるものとしています。彼の、知っていることだけについて話す、自分の立場をはっきりさせる、という態度は、個人的には好きです。

Although diehard theologians seem minimally affected by this book according to the author, I would like to say congratulations on "The GOD Delusion" in success in denying the existence of GOD. However, whether or not the author has been successful in giving a meaningful basis for the life of ordinary people is yet to be answered. The problem with this kind of scientific thesis is that, if I borrow a paragraph from existing "psychical knowledge," "Science's thesis meets with no answering affirmation in the human heart--and in fact arouses the deepest antipathy." and this may be a reason why people need "God." The same psychical knowledge also says: “All religions are distortive. For that matter much of your science is distortive. Both arrive at approximations, at best, of reality. Religion has been the cause of much prejudice and cruelty, but the bomb over Hiroshima was not caused by the Catholic Saint Theresa showering down any roses. The distortions in science and religion have been truly disastrous.” Prof. Steven Weinberg is quoted by the author as saying (in Chapter 7/ p. 283) "Religion is an insult to human dignity. With or without it...." I agree with the opinion. However, if you take the research results of the late Prof. Ian Stevenson (1918-2007)on "reincarnation of human," then you can also say that "Darwinism is an insult to human dignity, because it says that ape is our distant ancestor!"

この本を読むと「アメリカはキリスト教原理主義が根強く不自由な国だ」と思うかも知れない。
しかし、他人事だろうか？自衛隊派遣等で随分付き合わされている訳であるし、日本にも一部
原理主義が無い訳でもないだろう。
特に役に立つ章は「宗教なしに道徳観を持つ事が出来るか」について書かれている章だと思う。
著者の答えは「出来る」であるが、なぜかは一読して頂きたい。
ノーベル賞を受賞したアメリカの物理学者スティーヴン・ワインバーグ氏の言葉を引用している。
Religion is an insult to human dignity. With or without it, you'd have good people
doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things,
it takes religion.
宗教は信じる者と信じない者を別けるので、排他的な性格を帯び、折角利他的あるいは親社会的な
面があっても信者にしか教義を適用しない場合がある。更に、判断力が無い子供の時から洗脳されて
しまうと、異教徒に対する嫌悪感を持たせるという問題も指摘している。
著者の進化論を基礎とした議論には説得力がある。
この本を読むと、改めて我々日本人の遺伝子に宗教中立の面がある事に感謝したくなる。
それも著者が触れている通り、There's no one-to-one mapping b/w genes and units of anatomy.
という訳だ。社会と人体のアナロジーからすると、日本が歴史の流れの中で宗教との付き合い方を学び、
個々の宗教ではなく多様な宗教を受け入れてきた結果、現在の状況に辿り着いたと云ったところだろう。
使われている単語の難度が高いと思う。旧約聖書のDeuteronomy（申命記）、Leviticus（レビ記）、
バイオ関連のblastula（胞胚）、gastrula（原腸胚）、neurula（神経胚）といった名詞だけでなく
動詞も高度な単語が多用されているので、ボキャブラリ・ビルディングに最適と思う。
この本を読んだ後に英字新聞を読むと非常に簡単に感じるだろう。

Whatever our faith or belief in something, this book dispels and strengthens the convictions we held before. It is a book meant for the open-minded who appreciate varying views of what man holds as the most mysterious of all things (God). The views of different peoples, cultures and religions should be taken into consideration in whatever judgements we make on this.This is so because I had this fascinating insight into this subject from a story with the title The Verdict of Hades, found in the book "The Usurper and Other Stories. The God Delusion is a book to read.
