I have ever read. The family of the author

The Wild Swans should be one of the trilogy of the modern history of China. Another two are the Sorrow Mountain by Ani Pachen and the Life and Death in Shanghai by Nien Cheng. These era of the Chinese history had been strictly in concealment and covered with severe censorship. This book is a history of a family of three generations and from their points of view, we could watch hear and feel the intolerable horror that had happened everywhere in China. Starving to death, torturing to death and being killed without any reason, everywhere everyday on every people. Now Miss Jung Chan would guide us into the black hole China. Could you keep yourself calm enuogh to read on? For your relief, I would say that a little great man has saved the people from those confusion and made the foundation of prosperity now in China. If the book belongs to you, you may cut it into three pieces.

実話です

この本は作者も含め親子３代の話で構成されています。　中国の歴史、特に文化革命時代の頃が描かれていて、こんな恐ろしいことがあったのか・・と言う場面もあるのですが、親子愛や中国人の女性の強さがとてもよく描かれています。話は長く、読破には時間がかかると思うのですが、実話でもありかなりのボリューム感があると思います。

親子三代

この小説は実話らしいのですが・・中国の文化大革命時代の親子三代の話が書いてあります。中国の歴史や文化の事実を知りたい方にぜひおすすめです。かなり長いので読み終わるのは大変かもしれませんが、スケールの大きい話で読み応えがあると思います。

一読、巻を措く能わず、とはこのこと

　私がこれを読み始めたことを知ったある友人が、気をつけたほうが良いわよ、その本、おもしろくて他のことが手につかなくなるから、と警告してくれたものです。その言葉は決して大げさではありませんでした。彼女の言うとおり、この本を一度読み始めたら、頁を繰るのをやめられなくなってしまいました。

　徹頭徹尾平易な英語でありながらこれだけ迫力に満ちた大部の物語を綴っていく著者の力量にとにかく脱帽です。時代に翻弄された中国3代の娘たちの物語はあまりにも波乱にとんでいて、一気に読ませる。次回作がとても楽しみな作家だと思います。

　余談ですが、中国の現代史用語を英語で何と表現するのかということもこれを読めば身に付きます。

中国といえば、「三国志」、「十八史略」などの古代歴史文学が好きな人が多いと思いますが、この本は近代の中国を鮮明に描いた歴史文学といっても過言ではありません。３世代の女性の生きた時代を、読者が彼女たちと一緒に生き延びていくような心境になれるくらい時代背景がよく描かれており、また権力闘争に巻き込まれていった"民衆"の視点で時代が映し出されていくので、その時の「悲惨さ」が強烈過ぎるくらい伝わってきます。真実を知るうえではとても勉強になり、また彼女たちの生きる力を感じます。

時代のうねりに翻弄されながらも強く生きる人々

彼女達に限らず、あの時代の中国に生きた人々の、悲しみや怒り、苦悩や強さが感じられます。あまりに壮絶な為、暗く悲しく感じられるかもしれませんが、その中に人間の強さを感じます。その内容に、読み出してしまえば、誰もがあっという間に、読み終えてしまうことでしょう。中国語で読めば、また違ったニュアンスが感じられると思い中国語版を探しております。

See China's 20th Century History from a Unique Perspective

Chang's memoir is haunting, and powerful. She shows the history of her family, in particular of herself, mother, and grandmother, which shows the history and turmoil of China, especially for women, during the past century. Gives a good feel for what it must have been like to have lived through all the madness.
