A book that inspired Europeans to quest for the riches of the East
Marco Polo accompanied his father and uncle on their second journey to China. Traveling across central Asia and the Gobi desert, they arrived at the court of Kublai Khan in 1275. The Great Khan took special notice of Marco and sent him as envoy to various places throughout the empire.
Two decades later, the three Venetians returned home via Sumatra, India and Persia, laden with the great wealth they had accumulated. In 1298, Marco was taken prisoner at Genoa, where he dictated an account of his travels and fantastic lands he had visited and heard about. (Japan is described as a very big island where the people have gold in great abundance, because it is found there in measureless quantities, and the ruler has a very large palace entirely roofed with fine gold.)
Vivid and beguiling, The Travels of Marco Polo was widely read, and aroused European interest in the East and its riches. (Christopher Columbus is known to have taken a heavily annotated copy with him when he set out to reach India by sailing westward.)
Barely believable adventures
Marco writes well enough of his travels and you feel that you are there. You can actually follow the trail if you have a map. He describes the flora and fauna of each region and describes the economics and industry of the region.
Example: "The women of the superior class are in like manner free from superfluous hairs; their skins are fare, and they are well formed."
It is interesting to see how little has changed from Marco Polo's 13th century and now.
旅行好きには必読かも
云わずと知れた『東方見聞録』。
フビライハンの庇護の下、中央アジア、中国、東南アジア、アラビア世界を勢力的に旅して回ったことがよく描かれている。
マルコポーロといえば冒険家のイメージがある。しかし、実のところ彼は今でいう国際派商社マンというところだ。新たな市場を開拓するという野望を持って、モンゴル帝国の勢力を利用しつつ世界を回っていたのだ。マルコポーロの父親も貿易商だったことからも、彼がこのような人生を辿るということはある程度想像できる。もっともその規模は驚異的だが。
自分にとってそのなかで何がいちばん興味深いかといえば、それは各地域における特異性だった。いまでこそ中国、インドネシア、インドといえば、それぞれが一つの国家であるが、この時代はかなり細かな地域に分かれていた。そして、その地域ごとによって慣習や風俗なども異なり、それが保たれていた。そして、そのあたりのことがかなり多く書かれていて面白いものだった。
書き方についていえば、何度も同じフレーズが登場するのだが、逆にそれが年代を感じさせる要因になっていたと思う。
この『The Travels』は各ヨーロッパ言語ごとのバージョンが存在するようだが、その中身はそれぞれ少し異なり、その原本についても未だ分からない部分が多いようだ。
